Just wanted to send out one last reminder about the progress reports.  They went home today.

Remembrance Day Art

Today in art class we continued to work on our poppy, cross and star mural.  We made it with long paper, pastels, and pencils.  You have to press really hard with the pastels.  It was really fun to work on this art project!

Our school's Remembrance Day assembly is this Friday at 11:15.  Parents are invited to attend the ceremony.  Our class has been working on some art work that will be on display in the gym during the assembly.

I will post some photos of the art work at the end of the week.

Envelopes also went home today for donations for Remembrance Day.  We ask that any donations are returned to the school by Friday,

Thank-you,

Battery Collection Challenge

The school is currently collecting old batteries.  Batteries make up a small portion of the garbage that goes to local landfills, however they are responsible for a large portion of the heavy metals found in our soil.  The school is attempting redirect those old batteries away from local landfills.

Mr. Wilson

"Look! We have collected so many batteries.  It's only been 2 or 3 weeks since we started. Wow!  That's amazing. And remember to keep bringing in more batteries."

Pumpkin Math (Day 2)

The students really enjoyed pulling out all of the pumpkin seeds from our pumpkins yesterday.  This was the first time in three years, I didn't have any students say they didn't want to put their hands in the pumpkins.  Some didn't want to use the spoons and just dove in with their hands.

With used the pumpkin seeds to make and check out estimating skills.  We also used them to practice some skip counting and multiplication.

Here are a few photos.

Notices home.

Dear parents,

Last night several notices went home with students.  Included in those items was the order forms for the students school pictures.  Please note the due date for their return: Oct. 26.  Also there was a letter regarding a communication App called "Remind".  This form requires some information from you, so please return it as soon as you are able.

Thank-you,
Brodie Wilson

Putting the Cardboard Creations to Use

Today we ran a pretend carnival using the students cardboard creations.  The students in the class charged their classmates to play their games.  Each student was given some spending money to play the different games.  It was fun to watch how some students liked spending the money, while others didn't want to leave their own games because they enjoyed making money.  Of course all the money was pretend, but that didn't seem to matter.

Terry Fox Run

Yesterday afternoon the students participated in the annual Terry Fox run.  The students have been bringing in donations for a couple of weeks now.  The school will continue to collect donations next week in an attempt to reach our goal.  I didn't get pictures of the students running but here are few photos from after the event.

Cardboard Creations

Last night during the "Meet the Teacher Night" the students cardboard creations were on display in the gym.  I know that not everyone was able to make the event so I thought I would post some pictures of the creations.

Cardboard Challenge

You may have heard your children talking about the Cardboard Challenge.  The cardboard challenge is an activity where the students are asked to create "something" out of cardboard and/or other recycled materials.  The students have watched a couple of videos to help them come with ideas.  But the goal is to give them the opportunity to be creative and come up with their original designs.  I will be providing time in class to work on their creations.

In order for the work to begin though we need your help.

Can you please help your child collect the materials they will need and remind them to bring them to school over the next two days?

Please let me know if you have any questions,
Brodie Wilson

P.S.  Here are the links to the videos if you would like to check them out.

Thank-you.

Picture Day

You should notice that your child has brought home a notice today regarding the upcoming picture day.  The information sheet does not give the date.  I did ask students to write the date on the sheet but just in case they did not, here it is:

Tuesday, September 27th

Have a great weekend!

Google Drive

During math today the students played some online math games that allowed them to practice their rounding skills.  The links for the math games have been added to your child's Google Drive.

Students can access their Google Drives at home.  Here are the steps:

1. Open you internet browser  (e.g. Google Chrome, Internet Explorer)
2. Go to https://www.google.ca
3. In the top right hand corner of the screen you should see a "sign in" tab.

4. The students have a personal sign in code.  (They should know their code or have it written on a piece of paper.  It will be the first 4 letters of their name and then 4 numbers.  After they type out their code you must add "@scdsb.on.ca" before you hit the enter key.)
Example username: brod8459@scdsb.on.ca

To access the games while in Google Drive:
1. Click on the "waffle" icon in the top right hand corner.
2. One of the icons that shows up will look like a triangle.  It is called Google Drive.
3. On the left side of the screen you should now see a tab that says: "Shared with me"
4. There will now be a document called "Pirate Rounding Game"
The links for the math games are in this document.

The steps may feel overwhelming but your child has done most of the steps at school already.  The step that might be new to them is adding the @scdsb.on.ca on to their username.

I am available most days after school.  If you have any difficulty accessing Google Drive feel free to stop by and I can show you how to access it.

Please feel to e-mail me if you have any questions.

Classroom Materials

Dear parents,

I have been asked by a couple of you if there are any materials that our classroom needs.  Currently, we are in need of Kleenex, paper towels, and liquid hand soap.  If you are able to donate any of these materials to the classroom it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for generosity,
Brodie Wilson

Introduction

Dear parents,

My name is Brodie Wilson and I will be your child's teacher for the current school year.  Most of you are probably aware that this is my first year teaching at Johnson Street Public School.  However, I have been teaching in Simcoe County for the last 13 years.  During that time I have been both a classroom teacher and a special education teacher.  Prior to coming to Johnson Street I spent the last two years teaching grade 4 and 5 at Alliston Union Public School.

The purpose of this blog is to give you a window into our classroom and to keep you informed of upcoming events.  I will be posting notices for items such as field trip dates (once they are determined) and class schedules (just waiting to confirm our gym times).  I will also post pictures of students participating in different activities during the day.

If you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to contact me.
bwilson@scdsb.on.ca
Or if you prefer you can send a note in with your child.

Thank-you, and I look forward to meeting all of you as the year progresses.
